Over the years I have made almost every mistake there is in boat sales. Learn from my experience. The following are some key points on how to sell your boat quickly. Some are obvious, some are painful. However, if you do what I suggest you will sell your boat faster and for more dollars than other comparable boats on the market. You ask “this is too obvious, why doesn’t everyone do it?”” They don’t. Be thankful. It’s your opportunity.
- Price Your Boat Right- Use the internet to find boats similar to yours. Call the owners or brokers selling the boats to find out how long the boat has been for sale or if there is something wrong with the boat. You’ll find that you will get a lot of useful information about how to market your boat. Take your emotion out of your process and look at these boats from a buyer’s perspective. If there are similar boats in the market for less money, why would someone buy your boat for more? If those boats are clean and well equipped, the answer is simple; they wouldn’t.
- Prepare your boat to sell- Now that you’ve done your research and know your pricing strategy, you have to make sure your boat is ready for the market. Thoroughly clean the boat inside and out. Your boat needs to shine and look perfect. Check every hatch and compartment for dirt or grime that might offend a potential buyer. You only have one chance to make a first impression. If there is anything broken or anything that needs attention, fix it! You may want to consider hiring a marine technician or marine surveyor to do a pre-sale inspection to make sure everything on the boat is in proper working order.
- Exposure- You need to make your boat visible to potential boat buyers. The days of putting your boat in the local newspaper are just about over. You need to get your boat in front of as many eyes as possible. BoatTrader.com provides a way to get some important internet exposure. You may also want to consider additional avenues like boat owners or fishing forums. You can enlist the services of a broker to list and sell your boat for a fee. Sometimes people don’t see the value in boat brokers, but after wasting a couple of weekends or missing the kids’ soccer games because you had to show someone your boat who never bothered to show up, you may change your mind.
- Wholesale – One option that sometimes goes over looked is the wholesale option. This option sometimes isn’t the best option for everyone, but it does provide a quick cost-effective way to sell your boat. You’re not going to get a retail price for your boat, but many of the cosmetic or maintenance items may be overlooked. Coupled with the monthly costs of owning a boat and the length of time it may take to sell, you could be better off.
Once you’ve made that mental commitment to sell your boat, you really need to move quickly. Remember that the world is a much smaller place and while you might be thinking about weather-stripping your windows somewhere, someone is oiling their fishing reels. Price your boat right, get your boat ready, and get maximum exposure! Or you could do it the easy way; just call me and I’ll do it for you.
